VENETIAN PLASTER
AND OTHER PREMIUM PLASTER FINISHES
The term "Venetian plaster" has become a catch-all phrase for various wall and ceiling finishes, often with little in common beyond the name. While some "Venetian" plasters are synthetic, others are natural and rooted in traditional techniques used by artisans for centuries. Both types have their own merits, and understanding the difference is crucial to making an informed decision.
Synthetic Venetian plasters are designed to mimic the look of lime-based plaster but are typically made from acrylic. They are more akin to paint than plaster, serving as a barrier coating rather than a breathable surface. While less expensive and widely available, they lack the quality and longevity of true-based plasters.
In contrast, natural lime-based "Venetian" plasters have been used on iconic projects like the pyramids of Egypt and the Sistine Chapel, offering a finish that can last far thousands of years. These eco-friendly plasters are made from lime marble, and gypsum, and can be tinted to achieve a specific color. With multiple coats applied, they produce a beautifully mottled finish that can be smooth surface, making dings and scratches less noticeable. Additionally, these plasters can be used in showers due to their water and mildew resistance and can even filter air by absorbing carbon dioxide and regulating humidity.
